If you look at this image, you can see the original render that I was working from. The lighting is a rudimentary pre-set, the render settings are basic, and the material settings largely irrelevant. In my photo editor, I made adjustments to the highlights and shadows (don't be afraid to loose some detail), and the colours, all of which set out the mood for me to establish with a simple background.
